Housing shortages are a growing challenge in Clare, Isabella, and Osceola counties, where employers struggle to attract and retain workers due to a lack of affordable housing options. To address this, Michigan is launching the Employer-Assisted Housing Fund, a $10 million state initiative designed to help employers invest in local workforce housing. Administered by MSHDA, this program partners with businesses, local governments, and housing professionals to create sustainable housing solutions near job centers.
Why This Matters for Our Communities
The need for workforce housing is especially urgent in our area:
- Many businesses across Middle Michigan are growing, but the housing supply isn't keeping up.
- From 2014 to 2023, Michigan built just one new home for every 14 new jobs, leaving many workers with limited options close to their workplaces.
- Employers in key industries—including manufacturing, healthcare, and education—see the problem firsthand but often lack the tools to make a direct impact.
How It Works
Employers in Clare, Isabella, and Osceola counties can take advantage of this program by investing in housing for their workforce. Contributions can include cash investments, land donations, or below-market interest loans. In return, the Fund provides financial resources to support the development of new homes.
- Rental housing must remain affordable for at least 10 years.
- For-sale housing must remain affordable for five years.
This initiative isn’t just about building homes—it’s about strengthening our local communities, ensuring economic stability, and helping businesses thrive.

MSHDA will begin accepting applications on Monday, February 24, at 9:00 a.m. ET. Employers and community leaders interested in learning more about how this can benefit Clare, Isabella, and Osceola counties should stay tuned for additional details.
