It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that Middle Michigan Development Corporation (MMDC) announces the passing of our esteemed President and CEO, James (Jim) McBryde. Jim’s unwavering commitment, visionary leadership, and deep passion for economic development have left an indelible mark on the communities of Clare, Gladwin, Isabella and Clare counties, and his absence will be deeply felt.
On behalf of a grateful board, we mourn the loss of our fellow community leader, colleague and friend. Jim’s legacy of compassionate leadership is inspiring and respected well beyond our region and state. And he will be profoundly missed. - Jerome Schwind, MMDC Board Chair
Jim joined MMDC as President and CEO in 2015, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a steadfast dedication to fostering growth and prosperity in our region. His tenure was defined by his ability to craft a strategic vision and his tireless efforts to bring it to life, always prioritizing the needs of local businesses, municipalities, and residents. After assuming the role of President and CEO, the region experienced a direct impact of over 14 million dollars in grant funding and saw the Middle Michigan region expand from two counties to four.
Prior to his time with MMDC, Jim’s distinguished career spanned numerous pivotal roles in Michigan’s public and economic sectors. As Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), he played an instrumental role in securing the passage of key legislative priorities, ensuring twelve consecutive fully funded annual budgets for the MEDC. His contributions extended beyond economic development, as he also served as Interim Chair for the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and as a Special Assistant for the Michigan Department of Community Health.
Jim’s legacy in public service began in the Michigan House of Representatives, where he served the 99th District for eight years. A respected legislator, he chaired the State Police and Military Affairs Subcommittee and served as Vice Chair of the Higher Education Subcommittee, making meaningful contributions to the state’s safety, education, and overall welfare. His commitment to his alma mater, Central Michigan University, and the Mount Pleasant community was evident throughout his life.
Jim’s many accolades reflect the breadth and depth of his impact, including the CMU Centennial Award, Legislator of the Year by the Michigan Sheriffs Association, the Merit Service Award by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, and the Distinguished Service Award from the MEDC. Most recently, he was honored as a Medalist for the Economic Developer of the Year by the Michigan Economic Developers Association in 2020.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim’s warmth, humor, and humility touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He shared a rich and joyful life with his beloved wife, Kim, and their four daughters, who were the pride of his life. He also enjoyed his most recent role as ‘grandpa.’ Jim’s fun-loving spirit shone in his unique experiences, including appearing as an extra in two Star Wars films—a testament to his multifaceted personality.
As we mourn this tremendous loss, we also celebrate Jim’s extraordinary life and enduring contributions to our community. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to honor his vision and dedication to economic development in Middle Michigan.
Jim McBryde's unwavering dedication to the State of Michigan and the communities throughout the Middle Michigan service area leaves an enduring legacy. The MMDC team is deeply saddened by this loss but remains committed to carrying forward the work and vision that Jim so passionately inspired in us. - Kati Mora, MMDC Vice President
