Honoring Resilience and Innovation During Women’s History Month

by Caroline Roberts on March 21, 2025

In recognition of Women’s History Month, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in business and leadership. Today, we are honored to highlight the inspiring journey of Christine Smith, whose unwavering determination and entrepreneurial spirit have left a lasting impact on the Clare community.

For over sixteen years, Christine was a dedicated member of downtown Clare, serving in various roles at the Doherty Hotel. Following her departure to pursue personal endeavors, she faced a series of unimaginable challenges, including an aggressive cancer diagnosis, a devastating stroke and a heart attack. After undergoing thirty surgeries and four years of rehabilitation, Christine’s perseverance never wavered. She thanks her support system for saying “I have been blessed with a multitude of amazing women who have supported, encouraged and inspired me. This list includes my daughters, Audrey and Taylor, many cousins, a few Aunts, my Grams, many female friends, and a couple former boss-lady employers. Without these women, I would likely have given up a long time ago.”

Determined to make a meaningful return, Christine and her husband, Joe—an experienced business owner of more than thirty years—established CULA Café in 2018. Specializing in vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free cuisine, the café quickly became a beloved addition to the community. Recognizing the potential of the historic 130-year-old building, Christine and Joe, with guidance from Jeff Punches of the Small Business Development Center, envisioned a space that would foster economic growth and collaboration. Their efforts led to the creation of the Cardinal & Clover Collaborative, which now hosts 15 separate businesses.

Christine’s story is a testament to the resilience, innovation, and leadership that Women’s History Month seeks to honor. We are privileged to recognize her outstanding contributions with this well-deserved award.

Please join us in celebrating Christine’s achievements and the countless women who continue to shape our communities through their dedication and vision.
